Box Score 2 ATLANTA – The University of Chicago volleyball team defeated Brandeis University and lost to Emory University on Sunday at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #3.
The No. 18-ranked Maroons ran their record to 12-8 on the season and 5-2 in UAA play.
UChicago 3, Brandeis 0
UChicago made quick work of Brandeis (5-15 record) in the first set. The Judges hit -.200 and the Maroons finished the set on a 12-3 run to win 25-14.
Then in the second set, Brandeis led from the opening point and built an 18-13 advantage. Five unanswered points by UChicago tied it up, and the Maroons closed strong again with a 7-1 burst to get the 25-22 victory.
A close third set (18-17) saw the Maroons close with aplomb once again to finish the sweep 25-20.
Brandeis was limited to a .000 hitting percentage compared to .152 for UChicago. The defense finished with seven blocks, while the Maroons accumulated 10 service aces as well.
Junior Ellie Alden and senior Temilade Adekoya finished with six kills each. Alden added four blocks and two aces. First-year Emma Lotts and sophomore Christine Jurgens had five kills apiece. First-year libero Julia Craig posted 10 digs, while sophomore setter Maya Patel recorded 21 assists. First-year Bettye Igbenebor recorded three aces.
Emory 3, UChicago 0
The Maroons started their second match strong against No. 13-ranked Emory (17-3 record), building a 13-7 advantage. But the Eagles responded emphatically by reeling off eight points in-a-row. UChicago weathered the storm and retook the lead 22-19. Once again, Emory held sway and snatched the set away 26-24.
The hosts hit .410 in the second set and closed with a 7-1 run to go up two sets, 25-18. After a 17-17 tie in the third set, the Eagles pulled away again to wrap up the match 25-19.
Emory posted a .252 hitting percentage while UChicago swung at a .194 rate. Sophomore Ella Mao paced the team with eight kills. Lotts smacked six kills and a .308 hitting percentage. Adekoya contributed five kills, five digs and three aces. Patel handed out 26 assists. Craig and Igbenebor concluded with 14 and 11 digs, respectively.
