Maroon Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision at WashU

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A relentless offensive pursuit in the second half did not turn up a goal for the University of Chicago men's soccer team in a 1-0 loss on the road at Washington University – St. Louis on Saturday night.

The No. 10-ranked Maroons ran their record to 12-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The No. 3-ranked Bears improved to 12-2-1 (5-1-1 UAA).

The NCAA Division III Championship field selection show will be broadcast online at NCAA.com on Monday starting at Noon (CT). UChicago has participated in the postseason six times since 2014 and will be looking for a Pool C at-large selection.

Saturday's matchup had conference title implications, as the winner would clinch the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The hosts jumped on top right away with a goal 4:20 into the contest. It was only the second goal that the Maroons have allowed in the first half of a game all season.

With the Bears content to put bodies behind the ball in the second half, UChicago pushed hard for the equalizer. The visitors outshot WashU 10-0 in the second half and also collected an eye-opening 10 corner kicks in the period. Their closest call came in the 65th minute when sophomore Ryan Yetishefsky sent a header off the crossbar, but the descending rebound was controlled by the goalkeeper.

WashU held on down the stretch for the win, despite being outshot 14-4 in the game with an 11-0 corner kick deficit.

UChicago senior goalkeeper Calvin Walters (10-5-1 record) made two saves with one goal allowed in 90 minutes of play. Junior Naz Kabbani attempted a team-high four shots, including three on goal.
