Maroon Softball Shuts Down Aurora 3-0 and 5-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago softball team snapped Aurora University's 18-game winning streak on Tuesday with a pair of shutout victories on the road, 3-0 and 5-0.

The Maroons improved to 11-14 while the Spartans dropped to 33-5.

Game One – UChicago 3, Aurora 0

Elizabeth Press struck the opening blow for UChicago – the sophomore launched a leadoff homer in the top of the second inning. Then in the fifth, first-year Ava Sinai and junior Samantha Lauro posted RBI singles to make it 3-0.

In the pitching circle, Maroon starting pitcher Delaney Romanchick kept the potent Aurora bats silent. The Spartans were averaging seven runs per game while hitting .376 as a team. But Romanchick got the better of the hosts for 6.1 scoreless innings. The first-year allowed six hits with two walks and a strikeout. Aurora threatened to break the shutout by loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth until a grounder snuffed out the rally.

Down to their final outs, the Spartans put two runners on in the seventh. First-year pitcher Delaney Choi entered the game and struck out the next batter looking. After a walk filled the bags, a ground ball to third base clinched the 3-0 win for the Maroons.

Romanchick improved her season record to 3-5 while Choi secured her first collegiate save.

UChicago concluded with five hits and two errors. Junior Jules Waller went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Game Two – UChicago 5, Aurora 0

Press was at it again in game two, cranking her team-best fifth long ball of the year. Her solo homer occurred in the top of the fourth innings. Junior Savannah Pinedo immediately followed with a triple to right field. She came around to score on a sacrifice fly from senior Jessica Perez.

Three-straight singles in the sixth gave the Maroons some valuable insurance. Waller knocked in two with her single to center field. The final tally of the game came in the seventh thanks to an RBI single by Press.

The sophomore pitcher was equally effective in the circle as she was in the batter's box. Press hurled a complete-game shutout – the first of her collegiate career – limiting Aurora to five hits and two walks while striking out two. She evened up her season record at 4-4.

The Maroons banged out 12 hits in the contest. Press, Pinedo, junior Maddy Mudrick and junior Bethany Regnerus compiled two hits apiece.
