Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team was edged out by University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3-1 and Bates College 5-4 on Tuesday.
The Maroons ran their season record to 4-4.
Game One – Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3, UChicago 1
The opening five innings played out as a pitcher's duel, with both offenses being held in check. The lone run that came through during that time was in the bottom of the fourth, when first-year Laila Sims smacked an RBI double down the left field line.
UWSP finally broke through in the top of the sixth. A fielder's choice, a sacrifice fly and a single up the middle accounted for a trio of runs. The Pointers then held the Maroons off the scoreboard for the final two frames to get the win.
UChicago posted five hits and one error in the contest. Seniors Katie O'Donnell and Lainey Hughes both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
First-year pitcher Paige Heffke (2-2 record) threw a complete game with three runs on seven hits and three strikeouts.
Game Two – Bates 5, UChicago 4
The Maroons struck first in the top of the first inning when senior Savannah Pinedo cracked an RBI double to right field with two outs. However, Bates countered with a quartet of runs in the bottom of the second to go up 4-1.
By the end of the fourth inning, UChicago had battled back to tie the score up at 4-4. An outfield error by the Bobcats allowed a runner to score all the way from first base. Junior Daisy Brownfield knocked an RBI single to the opposite field, and then came around to score thanks to senior Maddy Mudrick's triple to right.
But defensive miscues bit the Maroons at an inopportune time. A pair of errors to start the bottom of the fifth gave Bates the opportunity to drive in the go-ahead run on a single. That proved to be the final run of the game as the Bobcats prevailed.
In the final box score, UChicago compiled six hits and four defensive errors. Pinedo batted 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Senior pitcher Bethany Regnerus got the start, going two innings with four runs on five hits with one error and two strikeouts. Sophomore Delaney Choi (1-1 record) took the loss in the circle. She pitched four innings with one unearned run on one hit while striking out two.
