Big Plays Highlight Homecoming Football Victory

CHICAGO – University of Chicago football welcomed Ripon to Stagg Field this afternoon for a homecoming weekend contest. The Maroons had to battle both the Red Hawks and the weather but were up to the challenge on both fronts in a 21-6 victory on Saturday.

RESULT
Ripon – 6
University of Chicago – 21

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The University of Chicago (3-3, 3-2 MWC) gave the big homecoming crowd something to cheer for right from the start when they took a big gamble and had it pay off. The Maroons kept the offense on the field for a 4th and 1 from their own 27-yard line and let quarterback Jack Ruff air a pass out for a 73-yard touchdown competition to Aden Nava less than four minutes into the ballgame.
  • Ripon (2-4, 3-3 MWC) used a two-yard run towards the end of the first quarter to get into the UChicago endzone but were unable to tie things up thanks to a missed point after attempt that sailed low and hit the crossbar.
  • Neither team would score in the second frame, but the Maroons offense came back to life after the intermission. Ruff took to the air again and connected with Diego Solis on a 23-yard pass that found paydirt in the third while Nava got into the endzone for the second time in the game with a four-yard run at the beginning of the final quarter of play. That touchdown came after Houston Weathers forced a fumble to give the Maroons the ball back with stellar field position.
  • UChicago limited the Red Hawks to just 34 net rushing yards and held them to 185 yards overall in the game. Will Skowronski led all Maroon players with 10 total tackles and five different players registered a sack in the 15-point victory at a rainy and windy Stagg Field.
