Football Can't Overcome Slow Start Against Rams

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Riding high after a dominating homecoming win one week ago, the University of Chicago football team traveled to Iowa to take on Midwest Conference foe Cornell. Unfortunately, a big Rams first quarter proved to be the difference as the Maroons fall to .500 in conference play with a 13-point loss on Saturday afternoon.

RESULT
University of Chicago – 34
Cornell College – 47

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • University of Chicago (3-4, 3-3 MWC) had a tough task ahead of them after allowing 13 points to Cornell (4-3, 4-2 MWC) while not scoring any themselves in the first quarter of play. They allowed another Rams touchdown to begin the second before Rhys Bommarito-Logan converted a two-yard run into a touchdown of their own to make it 20-7.
  • Cornell added another score with about a minute left before halftime, but Jack Ruff connected with Bommarito-Logan with just six seconds left to send the Maroons into the intermission on a high note and down 27-13.
  • UChicago got within seven points after Bommarito-Logan found paydirt for the third instance in the game, this time off a four-yard dash, but Cornell answered right back with two of their own to push their advantage to 41-20. An Aden Nava 35-yard reception from Ruff closed out the scoring in the third stanza and put the Maroons down by 14 with 15 minutes left to play.
  • The Rams kept figuring out ways to reach the endzone however and ended their scoring with 10:54 left. Down 47-27, Ruff hooked up with AJ Markett for a 25 yard completion to get within 13 but UChicago wouldn't convert another drive with the 2:33 remaining on the clock in a 47-34 loss.
