CHICAGO – It was a busy day inside the Ratner Athletics Center as the University of Chicago hosted the second UAA Round Robin of the 2023 season. The Maroons got their matches out of the way early with back-to-back battles against Brandeis and No. 12 WashU but were only able to come away with one win when all was said and done.
RESULTS
Brandeis – 0 (16, 15, 11)
University of Chicago – 3 (25, 25,25)
No. 12 WashU – 3 (27, 25, 25)
University of Chicago – 0 (25, 21, 20)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- vs. Brandeis
- University of Chicago (6-12, 2-3 UAA) was in full control during the opening match of the morning against Brandeis (7-8, 0-4 UAA) and disposed of the Judges in straight sets.
- The Maroons won each set by at least nine points, including a third set in which they triumphed 25-11.
- The home team hit a combined .253 over the course of the match and registered 37 kills and seven aces.
- Christine Jurgens and Maggie McInerney paced the Maroons with nine kills each while Maya Patel had three aces and Diya Mishra tallied three blocks in the 3-0 win.
- vs. No. 12 WashU
- Unfortunately, the 3-0 decision went the other way in the second game of the day when they took on No. 12 WashU. It was by no means a blowout though as UChicago was fighting for the victory in each set.
- The first frame was the closest and took the Bears two extra points to down Chicago 27-25. The second stanza was also a close affair, one that saw five ties, but the Maroons were never able to pull ahead. WashU jumped out to a big lead in the final set of the match, but the home team was able to muster a comeback to make things competitive in a 25-20 defeat.
- McInerney turned in another big performance and led all players with 15 kills while Jillian Amsler held the team advantage in total blocks this time around with three.
