Women's Basketball End Midway Classic With Dual 16-Point Wins

CHICAGO – After a big win to open their season, No. 22 University of Chicago was back at it for back-to-back games inside the Ratner Athletic Center for the 2023 Midway Classic. The Maroons were in fine form on both sides of the ball and came away with dual 16-point victories over Pomona-Pitzer and Denison when all was said and done.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • vs. Pomona-Pitzer
    • First up for No. 22 University of Chicago (3-0) was the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer (0-1), a team making the trek into the Windy City from Southern California to play in the Midway Classic. Pomona tried to keep things close in the first half and only trailed by two entering the second quarter. However, a frame were the Maroons shot 60 percent from the field gave them a nine-point buffer entering the second half.
    • The UChicago defense shut down the Sagehens right out of the halftime gates, limiting the visitors to just nine points off just three field goals. The Maroons never trailed in the game and even with a fourth stanza where they were outscored 23-22, the home team still won their second game of the season by a comfortable 16 points.
    • Sophia North led UChicago with 14 points while the glass belonged to Alexis Clark and Kate Gross with seven rebounds each.
  • vs. Denison
    • Denison (2-1) was waiting for the women's team on Sunday afternoon with the Big Red trying to deal the Maroons their first loss of the year. If the away team wanted to achieve their goal, a 27-9 UChicago first quarter was not going to let them accomplish it. The Maroons also outpaced Denison 22-16 in the second to give them a 24-point lead entering the break.
    • The big advantage allowed Chicago to try out a few different looks rotation wise while still not comprising the eventual outcome of the game. Once again, the Maroons led wire to wire, and the bench threw in 25 points towards yet another 16-point victory as the first homestand of the season goes unblemished for the Maroons.
    • North once again led the team with 22 points while Marissa Powe contributed 18. Ellie Gross nearly pulled off a triple double with nine points, nine rebounds, and eight assists in the win.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will hit the court next this Saturday when they make the short trek north to take on Carthage. Tipoff from Kenosha, Wis. is slated for 2:00 pm.
