CHICAGO – University of Chicago's ninth-ranked tennis team held serve at home with a 6-3 victory over No. 2 WashU on Saturday morning.
The Maroons avenged a 6-3 defeat to the Bears at the ITA Indoor Nationals while securing a statement win in their final match before the UAA Tournament. UChicago took 2-of-3 doubles points and 4-of-6 singles points to clinch the victory.
Andrei Leonov and Sachin Das teamed up ffor an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Jack Wong and Pat Otero followed that with an 8-6 dispatching of their opponents at the No. 3 slot. With a 2-1 lead after doubles, UChicago brought its momentum into the singles action.
Arjun Asokumar led the way in singles with a 6-2, 7-6 win at the No. 1 spot. Emil Grantcharov, Das and Otero rounded out UChicago's winners with victories at Nos. 3, 4, and 5, resepectively. Grantcharov and Otero won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-4, 7-5, respectively. Das had to grind out a victory after dropping the opening set, but responded with 6-0 and 6-1 wins in the final two frames.
UChicago will next travel to the UAA Tournament, which begins Friday, April 21 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
