Box Score 2 CHICAGO – University of Chicago's softball program split its doubleheader with Lake Forest College on Sunday.
The Maroons claimed a dramatic 4-3 walk-off victory in nine innings to conclude game one, but fell 2-0 in the second game in five innings, due to darkness.
Game One
The Maroons trailed 2-0 after LFC's first two at-bats, but responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. The Foresters then responded with a run in the top of third, of which UChicago matched in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Madeline Murphy tripled to open up the bottom of the ninth before Ava Sinai singled home pinch-runner Nicole Wong with two outs to claim the win. Paige Heffke (11-3) pitched a complete game, surrendering just two earned runs while striking out 10.
Olivia Cataldo provided a big hit to keep the game alive, knocking in Anna Jensen with an RBI single in UChicago's potential final at-bat. Murphy and Folkl led the offense with two hits each. Cataldo, Sinai and Tory Piuze accounted for the Maroon RBIs.
Game Two
Delaney Romanchick (1-3) took the loss in a pitcher's duel, tossing 3.2 innings and giving up two runs, one earned, while striking out five. Delaney Choi pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. UChicago's bats were held in check with just three hits.
Jensen, Cataldo and Clare Fortier accounted for those three hits, of which Cataldo and Jensen both had doubles. Lake Forest's two runs both came in the top of the fourth as the Foresters scored on a wild pitch and RBI single.
The Maroons take on Wisconsin Lutheran in Milwaukee, Wis. at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 26.
