Box Score WHEATON, Ill. – The University of Chicago softball team utilized multiple big innings to sprint past Wheaton College by a 10-2 score on Thursday afternoon.
The Maroons improved to 22-8-1 while the Thunder fell to 7-26.
Madeline Murphy got UChicago off to a quick start in the top of the first inning with an RBI double to left. The visitors went on to tally three runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to end the game via run rule.
In the third inning, Tory Piuze and Ava Sinai both singled in runs, with a third score coming on an error. Murphy's sacrifice fly, Piuze's RBI single and an infield error pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fifth. Murphy then brought two runners home on a double to left center in the sixth. Sinai's RBI single up the middle closed out the scoring two batters later.
UChicago totaled 12 hits and one error in the contest. Murphy went 2-for-2 with a walk and four RBI. Sinai batted 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Piuze was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Anna Jensen scored four times after going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. Julia Folkl was 2-for-4 at the plate.
In four innings of work, starting pitcher Paige Heffke (13-3 record) only allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four. Nicole Wong and Delaney Choi hurled one inning each in relief.
