NEW YORK CITY – University of Chicago men's basketball was back at it on Sunday after evening up their UAA record two days prior but standing in their way of two victories in a row was No. 13 New York University. Unfortunately, the Violets were able to dispatch several Maroon leads and finally pulled ahead of UChicago for good in their first overtime game of the season.
FINAL SCORE - OVERTIME
UChicago – 77
No. 13 NYU - 83
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Thing were going well for the hot-handed University of Chicago (10-6, 2-3 UAA) men's basketball team in the first half and their game from long range allowed them to carry at least a five-point lead for most of it. However, a late run by No. 13 NYU (13-3, 3-2 UAA) allowed them to erase their deficit and take a three-point lead into the break.
- History seemed to repeat itself in the second half as UChicago was once again able to amass a lead that hovered around five points and got as large as nine with about 11 minutes left to go. Unfortunately, the Violets once again finished the half strong. The Maroons still led by four with just under two minutes to play but back-to-back NYU layups, with the last coming with 10 seconds left, sent the two teams into overtime tied at 67-67.
- The same pattern that was followed in regulation didn't apply to the bonus frame though. It was NYU that grabbed the first lead, one that they never let go of in the extra time. The Maroons shot just 30 percent from the field and went 0-for-6 from behind the three point line as the Violets come back to steal one away from UChicago by six.
