Big Second Half Leads To Maroons Men's Basketball Victory

CHICAGO – Looking to rebound after a tough loss on Sunday, University of Chicago men's basketball was back inside the Ratner Athletic Center looking to move back to .500 in UAA play when they took on Case Western Reserve University. The Maroons trailed by almost double digits after 20 minutes but stormed back with a dominate second half to take down the Spartans by ten.

FINAL SCORE
Case Western Reserve – 75
UChicago - 85

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • University of Chicago (11-6, 3-3 UAA) saw leads in both the first and second halves slip away in their overtime loss to NYU over the weekend and it looked like the same might happen against one-loss foe Case Western Reserve University (15-2, 4-2 UAA). The Maroons held a seven-point lead early on after back-to-back three pointers from Bryce Hopkins and Thomas Kurowski but the Spartans kept chipping away until they finally took over for the remaining four minutes of the half.
  • Down by nine after the first 20 and having shot 37.5 percent in the opening frame, UChicago exploded for 54 points off 71.4 percent shooting from the field and made 20 baskets. The Maroons also went 6-for-8 from behind the arc and made eight of ten shots from the charity stripe as they began their comeback.
  • It took a little bit of time, but Chicago finally grabbed the lead for good with 12:55 left after another Kurowski three pointer to put them up by two. The Spartans weren't an easy out though and stayed within two possessions for quite a while.
  • It wasn't until a tremendous rebound effort from Hopkins that led to an assist on a Eamonn Kenah tray that it was clear that UChicago was going to add another victory to their season win total. Free throws down the stretch iced the game even further as the Maroons impress with a 85-75 comeback win.
