Football Falls To IC In Offensive Slugfest

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The University of Chicago football team looked to extend their winning streak to 3 on Saturday night in Jacksonville against the Midwest Conference's top scoring team. Despite the Maroons' best offensive performance of the season, UChicago could never muster an answer for Illinois College's pinpoint passing attack, and the visitors were dealt a 13-point loss in a game that featured 87 total points.

RESULT
UChicago – 37
Illinois College – 50

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The 2,163 fans in attendance were in for a treat, because this game got off to a fast start with the two teams combining for 38 points in the first quarter. University of Chicago (2-3, 2-2 MWC) had a punt blocked deep in their own territory on their first drive, and Illinois College (3-2, 2-2 MWC) took full advantage as the Blueboys scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown to take a 7-0 lead less than four minutes in. However, junior Josh Minton returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to the house for the Maroons to tie the game 7-7. UChicago scored two more times before the end of the first frame with a 48-yard field goal by first year Walter Kilgore and a15-yard endzone connection between senior quarterback Teddy Gouldin and fellow senior wideout Diego Solis. Unfortunately for the visitors, Illinois College also scored twice, and two long touchdown passes of 57 and 71 yards gave the Blueboys a 21-17 lead after 15 minutes of play.
  • Junior receiver Colin Argue logged a 4-yard touchdown reception, the first of his career to give the visitors a 24-21 lead early in the second quarter, however, this would be the Maroons' only lead of the night. Illinois College responded with a 7-yard touchdown pass just three minutes later to retake the lead and then put together a staggering 7-minute, 18-play, 84-yard drive that was capped off by a 2-yard rushing score with just 45 seconds remaining in the second stanza. The Blueboys led 34-24 at halftime.
  • UChicago's defense managed to hold Illinois College to just 3 points in the third quarter, while graduate student Mozes Mooney hauled in a 26-yard touchdown strike from Gouldin to get the Maroons within 7 points. Illinois College clung to a 38-31 lead as the game headed to the final period.
  • Unfortunately for UChicago, the fourth quarter belonged to the Blueboys as the hosts continued their aerial assault, notching two more big-play touchdowns of 31 and 38-yards respectively. Senior Kyle James scored his third rushing touchdown of the season on a 2-yard plunge with less than two minutes remaining and Gouldin finished with a career-high 252 yards passing, but the MWC's top offensive squad proved too much for the Maroons to handle as they fell 50-37 under the lights in Jacksonville.
