Big Second Quarter Pushed Football Past Ripon

RIPON, Wis. – After having their two-game winning streak snapped by Illinois College last week, The University of Chicago football team looked to rebound Saturday afternoon in Wisconsin against the Ripon College Red Hawks. Behind a 17-point blitz in the second quarter coupled with a stellar defensive effort, the Maroons turned in their best game of the season to date and knocked off the Red Hawks for the second straight year.

RESULT
UChicago – 30
Ripon – 6

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UChicago (3-3, 3-2 MWC) marched deep into Ripon (2-4, 2-3 MWC) territory on their second possession of the game, however the Maroons' drive stalled with a fumble just outside the redzone. Each team's punter was the star of the opening quarter, and it was a scoreless game after 15 minutes.
  • A short punt by Ripon gave UChicago great field position to start the second quarter and senior quarterback Teddy Gouldin took advantage of it, linking up with graduate student Mozes Mooney for a 2-yard touchdown to give the Maroons a 7-0 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half. First-year Walter Kilgore then showed off his cannon of a leg on UChicago's next possession with a career-best 51-yard field goal to put the Maroons up 10-0. Then, on Ripon's ensuing possession, senior cornerback Jake Horowitz made the defensive play of the game, returning an interception 61 yards to the endzone. 17 UChicago points in the span of just under 7 minutes put the visitors ahead 17-0 at halftime.
  • The Maroons kept their foot on the gas in the third, refusing to allow the Red Hawks a chance to climb back into the game. Gouldin and the offense executed the team's best series of the game early in the third frame with a 9-play, 92-yard touchdown drive that senior Kyle James capped off with a 3-yard touchdown plunge. James paced the UChicago ground game with 71 rushing yards on the afternoon, and the visitors held a commanding 23-0 lead after three quarters of play.
  • Gouldin and Mooney connected again on a 5-yard touchdown strike midway through the fourth quarter to make the score 30-0, and that was more than enough for the formidable Maroons' defense. Jim Rouse, Houston Weathers, and Mark Gorbatenko all recorded sacks, while Michael D'Orazio racked up a team-best 10 tackles. Ripon notched a late touchdown with under 3 minutes remaining to avoid the shutout, but 6 points was all the Red Hawks offense could manage, as UChicago surged ahead to a 30-6 road victory.
