CHICAGO – University of Chicago Interim Head Football Coach
Max Andrews said this week that his team's play had been steadily improving, but he had yet to see his Maroons play their best game. On a sunny Saturday in front of a jam-packed Homecoming crowd, Andrews' team gave their coach the performance he had been looking for all season, as UChicago used a 27-point first half to cruise to a convincing victory over the Cornell College Rams.
RESULT
Cornell College – 14
University of Chicago – 33
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After University of Chicago's (4-3, 4-2 MWC) defense forced a Cornell College (3-4, 3-3 MWC) turnover on downs deep in their own territory, senior quarterback Teddy Gouldin connected with fellow senior wideout Diego Solis on a 33-yard crossing pattern for a touchdown to stake the hosts out to a 7-0 lead. A botched punt on the Rams' ensuing possession gifted UChicago the ball back at the Cornell 18-yard-line, and the Maroons would make Cornell pay for their mistake. Senior receiver Jayden Lucian reeled in a 22-yard touchdown pass, the first of his career, and gave UChicago a 14-0 lead after the first frame.
- The Maroons' defense forced a Rams' punt on their first possession of the second quarter, and that set the stage for one of UChicago's best series of the season. Gouldin and the offense executed an 18-play, 89-yard drive that chewed nearly 9 minutes off the clock before Jake Lowry notched the Maroons' third touchdown of the afternoon with a 1-yard plunge. Instead of kneeling out the remaining 1:43 of the first half, Cornell chose to be aggressive, and the move backfired. Sophomore Jurgis Schmedlen got home for a strip sack, senior Michael D'Orazio recovered at the Rams' 20-yard-line, and senior Kyle James rushed for a 1-yard score a few plays later. 2 touchdowns in 1:14 had UChicago up 27-0 at halftime.
- First-year Walter Kilgore kicked field goals of 40 and 29 yards in the second half, and that was more than enough for the Maroons' defense. Graduate student Aidan Cappellino and D'Orazio combined for 18 tackles at inside linebacker, junior Josh Minton secured his second interception of the season, and the defensive unit banded together to hold Cornell to just 21 minutes of possession and a 4-12 mark on third down. The Rams managed a pair of late touchdowns to make the scoreline more respectable, but there was no doubt about who the better team was today as UChicago marched to a 19-point victory in front of a large homecoming crowd.
