CHICAGO – To kickoff Homecoming Weekend, the University of Chicago women's soccer team took the field to face Case Western Reserve on Friday afternoon. In a heated rivalry matchup, the Spartans were able to net just one more than the Maroons.
RESULTS
(RV) Case Western - 3
UChicago – 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Within the first three minutes of the match, CWRU opened the scoring with a goal by Alexis Sassower to give the Spartans the early lead.
- Fueling the fire of the Maroons, Stella El-Fishawy tipped the ball as CWRU tried to force Chicago's offense out of the penalty area. She then forced a pass to the inside of Mary Stuart Kerrigan and after being tripped up by the Spartan goalie, Stuart Kerrigan sliced the ball into the left side of the net to tie up the score for UChicago.
- Chicago's quick response enforced what the viewers knew was to come out of the match between these two UAA rivals. A highly competitive and aggressive match that saw over 11 shots taken just in the first half.
- Before the first 45 minutes were up, CWRU put another score on the board to take the lead heading into the second half.
- Chicago's defense held strong as Livie Sabloff forced CWRU's attackers with limited strikes, but at 50:54 a goal by Sydney Schenk gave the Spartans a two-goal lead. Chicago fought back as fresh legs applied much-needed pressure on CWRU's defense. The sense of urgency had now become a problem for the Maroons as time was winding down.
- Just as the Spartans were starting to get comfortable, in an almost perfectly drawn-up set Sabloff forwarded a pass to Kamiryn Grimes. In stride for her fifth goal of the season, Grimes notched another score for the Maroons to make it a one-score game.
- Time was not on the side of UChicago as the match closed out with CWRU taking the 3-2 win. Both teams finished with six shots on goal, though the Spartans took the upper hand with six corner kicks compared to the Maroons four.
