Women's Soccer Takes Down No. 3 Tartans

CHICAGO – To cap off Homecoming Weekend, the University of Chicago women's soccer upset the No. 3 ranked Carnegie Mellon University for the win on Sunday morning. Following a loss against CWRU on Friday, the Maroons came back with a new found fire to attack the Tartans.

RESULTS
#3 Carnegie Mellon -0
 UChicago – 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Playing some of their best soccer in a dominant first half, the Maroons found their momentum early on. Executing on constantly moving the ball forward ignited another level of pressure on the Tartans.
  • After almost 30 minutes of play, Karena Shah came dribbling down the field to cross a pass to another Chicago player. Missing the first teammate, Mary Stuart Kerrigan found a way to connect with Shah's pass to slam the ball into a Carnegie player that lined up the Maroons game-winning goal.
  • Chicago's defense was the difference maker in the game. Holding CMU to a shutout with only two total shots taken the entire match, the Maroons held a strong backline with a team that is used to at least 13 shots a game. With their minimal possessions, Carnegie recorded only two corner kicks.
  • Chicago capitalized on maintaining possession for most of the match. Taking nine strikes with eight corner kicks, the Maroons' aggressive offense was the extra layer they needed to take home the win.
