Defense Shines In Dominant Win Over Beloit

CHICAGO- Fresh off their bye week, University of Chicago football welcomed the Beloit College Buccaneers to Stagg Field on Saturday afternoon. Behind a stellar defensive effort featuring 4 sacks and a pair of timely plays in the return game, the Maroons cruised to a 20-point victory, defeating Beloit for the 12th consecutive meeting.

RESULT
Beloit – 3
UChicago – 23

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • University of Chicago (2-2, 2-1 MWC) started the afternoon off with a bang as Jake Lowry returned the opening kickoff 57 yards to Beloit's (1-3, 1-2 MWC) 33-yard-line. Graduate student Mozes Mooney then caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from senior Teddy Gouldin to give the Maroons a 7-0 lead less than 4 minutes in. The Bucs looked to put up their first points midway through the opening quarter, but a 38-yard field goal attempt hooked wide left and UChicago led 7-0 after 15 minutes of play.
  • A 16-yard punt return by Josh Minton early in the second quarter set the Maroons' offense up with great field position at the Beloit 21. Gouldin and the UChicago offense took full advantage with first year Miles Parlet finding the endzone on a 7-yard rushing score. The Maroons had the extra point blocked, but first year Walter Kilgore drilled a 30-yard field goal on UChicago's next possession to give the hosts a 16-0 lead that they would take into halftime.
  • On Beloit's first possession of the third quarter, the visitors marched all the way down to the Maroons' 3-yard-line, however, on 4th down and goal, junior Zach Meyer and senior Jim Rouse combined for a pivotal sack to thwart the Bucs' best scoring opportunity of the afternoon. Neither team would put points up in the frame and UChicago led Beloit 16-0 after the third.
  • Although the Maroons did not score in the third quarter, following Meyer's sack, UChicago possessed the ball for the final 6 minutes of the frame and started the fourth on the Bucs' 21-yard-line. 4 plays into the final period, Parlet muscled his way into the endzone for his second rushing touchdown of the game to cap off a 16-play, 80-yard drive to extend the Maroons' lead to 23-0. That would be more than enough for the UChicago defense, who held Beloit to just 142 yards of total offense on the day and a staggering -39 rushing yards. Along with Meyer and Rouse, Maceo Marshall, Nicolas Koutsonicolis, and Mark Gorbatenko all registered sacks, while Aden Nava paced the receiving corps with 73 yards for the hosts. With 4 seconds remaining in the game, Beloit spoiled the Maroons' shutout with a 22-yard field goal, but UChicago still walked away with a 20-point win – their largest margin of victory this season.
