CHICAGO – On a brisk Saturday morning the University of Chicago women's soccer team took the No.1 team in the nation, Washington University in St. Louis, to a draw. Before Saturday's match, the Maroons took time to celebrate the nine members of the senior class and thank them for all they've done in their past four years as a part of UChicago women's soccer.
RESULTS
#1 WashU - 1
(RV) UChicago – 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Five minutes into one of the most crucial matches for Chicago, the Bears struck first as Meryl McKenna snuck the ball past the Maroons defense for an early 1-0 lead. WashU's gameplan of quick attacks worked in the first few minutes, but soon the Chicago defenders caught on.
- As tense play carried the ball back and forth over the midfield, both defenses were pulled out from normal positions to maintain a flow. Each team was forced to improvise as the smart offensive players kept reading what the defense gave them. To both WashU and Chicago, the game forced a battle of wits.
- Each shot the Maroons took was closer and closer to finding a way in, and finally in the 15th minute it did. As Sarah Ginsburg dribbled down the left side of the field, she struck a cross pass to find a Maroon in the middle of the goal box. Running in, Indira Naylor perfectly connected with Ginsburg's pass to head in the tying score for Chicago.
- As the first half was heavily offense focused for the Maroons, the second came down to defense. UChicago took a total of two shots in those last minutes as WashU mainly held position of the ball. Pilarski recorded four saves against the Bears five shots on goal.
- Late in the final minutes, WashU almost walked away with the win as two back-to-back shots clipped the goal post and the Maroons forced the ball back up to middle of the field. The small scare gave Chicago the momentum they needed to close out the tough match in a tie.
