Grand Rapids, Mich. - The University of Chicago women's soccer team triumphed over No. 14 Calvin 3-1 on Saturday, securing their place in the NCAA Women's Soccer Sweet Sixteen. A dominant first-half performance and solid defensive showing in the second half paved the way for the Maroons' success.
The Maroons struck first in the 29th minute as
Ashley Hayase delivered a well-placed shot to put UChicago ahead. Although Calvin responded with a goal in the 35th minute from Cecilia McCarthy, UChicago quickly regained the lead.
Jamie Nguyen scored in the 39th minute, assisted by
Ella Cho, and
Avery Gallucci extended the advantage in the 45th minute, finishing off a setup from
Livie Sabloff.
Both Hayase and Nguyen's goal was only their second of the entire season. Hayase hadn't attempted a shot since Sept. 28 vs Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
In the second half, UChicago's defense held firm, with goalkeeper
Sophie Pilarski making multiple key saves to preserve the lead. The Maroons managed Calvin's offensive pressure effectively and utilized strategic substitutions to maintain control throughout the game.
