Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

North Leads Women's Basketball to Midway Classic Sweep

CHICAGO – University of Chicago senior guard Sophia North entered today's Midway Classic matchup against the Middlebury College Panthers just 4 for 16 on the year from three-point range. However, anyone who has watched North play for the last two seasons knew that wouldn't last, and today the tide turned for the senior. North shot 4 for 6 from downtown, 67% overall from the field, and registered a game-high 24 points to lead the Maroons to a 25-point victory and a 4-0 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • · The first basket of the game was a North triple just 21 seconds in, which was a sign of good things to come for UChicago (4-0). Senior Bella Alfaro sank her first three-ball of the year and North added another bucket to give the Maroons a 12-9 lead on Middlebury (1-1) after the opening stanza.
  • · UChicago really started to build their lead in the second frame. North chipped in 5 more points including another strike from downtown and the Maroons' defense clamped down on the Panthers, holding the visitors from the NESCAC to less than 20 points in the first half. After 2 quarters, UChicago was up by double digits 30-20.
  • · The Maroons refused to relent in the third, and the hosts had a 22-point lead by the end of the period. North buried another three-pointer to go along with a few mid-range jumpers, while Alfaro and sophomore Bri Simpson added to the offensive total with timely baskets of their own. Heading to the fourth quarter, the Maroons were on top 49-27.
  • · North finished the game with 24 points, and the UChicago offense had a solid day overall shooting 40% from downtown, however, the hosts' defensive performance was arguably more impressive. The Maroons' defense had answers for everything Middlebury threw at them, forcing 22 Panthers' turnovers and holding the visitors to just 15 of 55 from the floor. Through the first 4 games of the season, no opponent has shot better than 38% or scored more than 53 points against UChicago. When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard showed a 66-41 Maroons win, as the hosts outscored Middlebury in every quarter to sweep the Midway Classic and improve to 4-0 on the 2024-2025 season.
