MEMPHIS, Tenn. -The University of Chicago men's basketball team completed a sweep at the 2024 Rhodes Classic after defeating Rhodes College and Colorado College in their first road games of the year. After falling in a heartbreaker to No.4 Illinois Wesleyan this week, Chicago found its revenge in Memphis as almost both wins were by double-digit points.
FINAL SCORE
Rhodes - 69
UChicago – 78
Colorado College - 63
UChicago – 74
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rhodes vs UChicago
- The Maroons scored 20 points within 10 minutes of the tip for one of their best offensive starts this season. As a made basket by Dom Martinelli extended the 22-13 lead for Chicago, the Lynx called a timeout as the Maroons' momentum roared.
- Rhodes was able to get their offense flowing, even taking the lead at one point, but Chicago fought back. Both teams answered each other's call, but the Maroons headed into halftime with a two-point lead.
- A six-point run capped off by a good three from Eamonn Kenah put UChicago's lead into double-digits. From then on it was smooth sailing for the Maroons as the closest the Lynx could get was within nine points. A fast break finish by Phillip Lawrence from Ben Chasin gave Chicago their biggest lead at 24 points with 2:30 left.
- Both Thomas Kurowski and Eamonn Kenah finished with 18 points. Kurowski also led the Maroons with seven rebounds as Luke Smith took seven off the board as well. Kenah recorded a season-high six assists.
Colorado College vs UChicago
- The Tigers found their offensive stride early on forcing a 9-4 deficit against the Maroons within the first three minutes of the game. After hitting a three and stopping Colorado College on defense, Chicago jumped out for a fastbreak play as Berry finished at the rim to give the Maroons their first lead of the game.
- Once both teams figured out the flow of the match, points were traded back and forth. The first half was a low-scoring one but the lead changed a total of 12 times. Both teams found themselves playing in survival mode.
- For most of the second half no team could stretch out a lead for more than four points. If the Maroons scored, the Tigers answered, and vice versa. What kept Chicago in the game was the type of shots they took. Taking smart looks and capitalizing on fast breaks help them pace the Tigers.
- Finally with eight minutes to go, Chicago ran out Colorado College and kept building a lead. After trying to tie up the game again, Daniel Cochran tipped in a rebound to keep the deficit at three, but that was the closest the Tigers got as the Maroons jumped out to a run and won the game by 11.
- Berry led Chicago with 18 points and three assists. He went 7-15 from the field and 3-4 from the beyond the arc. Cochran finished with a double-double as he tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds. The first-year forward has shown consistency in his first seven games.
