CHICAGO – University of Chicago women's basketball welcomed top ranked New York University to the Ratner Athletic Center to close out the home portion of their schedule and try to send off their seniors with a big win. While the Maroons couldn't take down the Violets, they didn't make it easy for NYU either and proved what a dangerous threat they could be if a postseason bid came their way.
FINAL SCORE
No. 1 NYU – 82
UChicago – 76
HOW IT HAPPENED
- University of Chicago (16-8, 9-4 UAA) and No. 1 NYU (24-0, 13-0 UAA) started off trading baskets in the early stages of the first quarter before the Violets went on a 9-0 run to close out the frame and put the Maroons down by eight heading into the second.
- However, that was when one of the several UChicago rallies started. NYU grew their lead to as large as 15 but UChicago was able to trim that down to four with just over a minute left before halftime. The home team had a chance to make it a one score game heading into the locker rooms but a turnover and tray from the Violets put Chicago down by seven after 20 minutes.
- A high scoring second half began with NYU outpacing the Maroons 23-19 in the third quarter which gave UC an 11-point hole to dig out of with ten minutes left. It was a task that they almost completed. Another UChicago comeback got them back within five with 36 seconds left but the Violets sunk all their free throws down the stretch to lock down the win. UChicago didn't so much lose as NYU survived and won the game by six points, their lowest margin of victory during their current 24 game winning streak.
