Baseball Closes Out California Trip With Blowout Win

PASADENA, Calif. – University of Chicago baseball finished off their California road trip still looking for their first win when they took on Caltech on Sunday. The Maroons bats that had otherwise been quiet exploded for 14 runs and easily cruised past the Beavers in seven innings.

RESULT
*SEVEN INNINGS*
UChicago – 14
Caltech – 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • University of Chicago (1-3) began the afternoon by putting up two runs on the board right away in the top of the first. Erik Rindner started things off with a single down the left field line that scored Jackson Slipock before Richard Lu hit a sacrifice fly to plate Braden Jirovec two batters later.
  • The Maroons would score two more in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth before erupting for seven tallies off Caltech (3-5) pitching in the sixth. Most of those runs came across thanks to either free passes or wild pitches but back-to-back singles from Slipock and Brady Miller pushed the last two runs of the stanza across.
  • The first frame runs were all that starter Phil Hogan would need for his first win of the season. He went four scoreless innings and retired all 12 batters he faced in just 43 pitches. John Butka would then close things off by earning the three inning save and allowing just one hit to the Beavers in the Maroons 14-0 win.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will be off until March 9th when they pick things back up with a three-game series against WashU. Saturday's doubleheader will have a game one start time of 12:00 pm.
