CHICAGO – University of Chicago men's basketball celebrated their three seniors on Sunday while also looking to take down No. 12 NYU at the same time. The Maroons got off to a slow start though and were never able to recover as they closed out home play with a 73-61 defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• This game did not get off to the most ideal of starts for University of Chicago (13-11, 5-8 UAA). They allowed No. 12 New York University (19-5, 9-4 UAA) to open the game on a 10-0 run and they'd eventually face a 24-6 deficit before their offense started to pick things up.
• The Maroons outscored the Violets 19-14 in the last 12 minutes of the opening half, but they had issues scoring from deep in the stanza and went 2-for-17 from behind the arc. However, they were still in the contest and entered the locker rooms down by 13.
• UChicago had a much more competitive second half and brought their shooting percentage up from 28 to just over 41 from the field. They still faced quite the challenge to get back to even against NYU and that job didn't get any easier as the visitors grew their lead to 24 with 11:20 to play. The Maroons didn't quit though and cut the NYU advantage down to 11 with just under three minutes left. Unfortunately, the comeback ran out of gas in the closing moments, and they had to settle for a 12-point defeat to close out play inside the Ratner in 2023-24.
• There was one big highlight in the game, however. Bryce Hopkins scored his 1,000^th point in the second half which added to the 500 rebounds mark he achieved last weekend on the road.

WHO'S ON DECK
