PITTSBURGH, Pa. – (RV) University of Chicago women's basketball took their three-game winning streak to the Steel City and put it to the test when they took on Carnegie Mellon for the second time in a week. The Maroons used solid play and a big third quarter to move their winning streak to four and sweep the season series against the Tartans in a 70-57 victory.
FINAL SCORE
(RV) Chicago – 70
Carnegie Mellon – 57
HOW IT HAPPENED
- (RV) University of Chicago (14-6, 7-2 UAA) came out the gates strong against Carnegie Mellon (10-10, 2-7 UAA) and fired 17 first quarter points towards their opponent. The Tartans tried to respond in kind, but the Maroons defense held the home team to just five field goals in the opening ten minutes and took a five-point lead into the second stanza.
- CMU managed to shave just two points off their deficit even with shooting over 58 percent in the frame, but it was the quarter following halftime that would sink the home team. UChicago scored 25 in the third compared to just 12 for the Tartans. Sophia North scored eight of her team high 17 points in the period and gave UC plenty of breathing room with ten minutes left to play.
- The Maroons let their defense take care of things the rest of the way and again held Carnegie to below 15 points for the third time in the contest. The Maroons bench played a factor in the outcome in a big way as well with 23 total points and the team had three players in double figures overall as they cruise to the easy 13-point win on Sunday to complete another perfect road trip.
