ROCHESTER, N.Y. – (RV) University of Chicago women's basketball hit the road for one last two game UAA road trip and began the journey on the East Coast in Rochester. The Maroons just couldn't shake the Yellowjackets throughout the contest but senior leadership down the stretch allowed UChicago to keep their winning streak rolling with a 74-70 win.
FINAL SCORE
(RV) UChicago – 74
Rochester – 70
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The low scoring, defensive battles of the past few weeks were a thing of the past this evening as (RV) University of Chicago (15-6, 8-2 UAA) had to use their firepower to get past the University of Rochester (10-11, 5-5 UAA). The Maroons outscored the Yellowjackets by two points in each of the first two quarters, but things got much more tense in the second half.
- Rochester held UChicago to a game low 30 percent shooting from the field in the third quarter and used that effort as an opening to draw within a single basket with ten minutes left to play.
- The Maroons were ready for the sprint down the stretch though. They made nine of their 17 shots in the frame and used some clutch baskets with under a minute left to seal the home team's fate.
- With the game tied 69-69 with 40 seconds left, Ellie Gross drove through the paint and hit a layup that counted for two of her game high 25 points to put the Maroons up by a pair. Rochester would again pull within a single point but a pair of free throws from Sophia North and one from Gross nailed down Chicago's fifth straight win and secured the season sweep of the Yellowjackets by four points.
