CAROL STREAM, Ill. – University of Chicago baseball finally got to play close to home as they returned to action against Wheaton in the suburbs. The contest saw multiple lead changes but a run in the bottom of the ninth allowed the Thunder to walk off against the Maroons on Tuesday.
RESULTS
UChicago – 6
Wheaton – 7
HOW IT HAPPENED
- University of Chicago (1-9) gave up the first run of the game in the bottom of the first but then stormed back over the course of the next three frames. The Maroons plated one in the second off a passed ball before scoring two in the third on an Erik Rindner double and continued the stepladder pattern with three in the fourth. Jackson Slipock singled to score Jack Sharp before he came around on a throwing error and the stanza was capped off with Michael Gladden crossing home on a wild pitch.
- Unfortunately, UChicago gave up three to Wheaton (5-6) in the bottom of the fourth but still held a 6-4 lead entering the back half of the ballgame. The Thunder went on to add a single run in each of the fifth and six innings to tie the contest at 6-6 but all was quiet during the next two frames.
- The Maroons got the go ahead run on in the ninth but were unable to push him home. The Thunder couldn't say the same thing, however. A single through the right side helped some small ball tactics pay off for the home team which allowed Wheaton to walk off with the 7-6 win.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
- Even with the loss, the Maroons still hold the all-time series advantage with six wins compared to five losses.
