#22 Lacrosse Falls In Back-and-Forth Affair

WASHINGTON, D.C. – No. 22 University of Chicago was back on the turf in the nation's capital and ready to close out their east coast trip with a battle against host Catholic. The two squads went blow for blow but an extra Cardinals goal in the first quarter proved to be fatal for the Maroons in an 11-10 defeat.

RESULT
No. 22 UChicago – 10
Catholic – 11

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • No. 22 University of Chicago (3-4) began the seesaw affair with Catholic (3-5) when the Maroons scored the first goal of the game just 13 seconds in on an unassisted Wynne Boggan strike. The Cardinals answered back with the next two though and scored their third of the frame after another Boggan tally to end the first quarter up 3-2.
  • That Catholic goal with 2:29 left to go in the opening period would play a major part in the outcome of the ballgame. The two teams proceeded to match each other goal for goal in the line score and the Maroons spread things around with four different scorers but entered the final 15 minutes of the contest still facing a single point deficit.
  • Boggan netted yet another goal after accumulating three others in the middle stanzas for her sixth of the game which got UChicago within one with 5:17 left to play. The Maroon defenders did their part in keeping the contest within reach, but the offense wasn't able to get a single shot off in the time remaining as UC falls by the slimmest of margins 11-10.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
  • The Maroons are now 1-1 against the Cardinals after facing off against each other in Washington D.C. in back-to-back seasons.
  • The score might have been about as equal as you can get but some of the team stats weren't so close. The Maroons got outshot 38-23 and were outpaced in ground balls by nine. UChicago did grab five more draw controls than the Cardinals however and had 14 saves compared to Catholic's eight.
