CHICAGO – No. 17 University of Chicago women's lacrosse was back in action after two weeks off and were tasked with their first top 25 competitor of the season in No. 24 Denison. The Maroons used a strong middle portion of the game to build up an advantage that would withstand a late Big Red run in a two goal home victory.
RESULT
No. 24 Denison – 14
No. 17 UChicago – 16
HOW IT HAPPENED
- No. 17 University of Chicago (2-0) kept things close in the first quarter as No. 24 Denison (1-3) traded goals with the home team and ended the opening frame tied at 2-2. Things really started clicking for the Maroons on the offensive end in the second, however. UChicago scored six goals, including four unanswered to close out the half and headed into the locker room up by three against the Big Red.
- Leading 8-5, the Maroons outpaced DU by two in the third and saw three of their five goals in the quarter scored by freshman Peyton McGuire who'd go on to lead all scorers with six in the game. This performance would be key as Denison had one last run in them.
- The Big Red pushed hard in the fourth quarter and got back within two after being down by as much as five with 13 minutes left in the game. However, a Jane Chen man-up goal gave the Maroons their game winner and a Skylar Lienhardt strike gave them some insurance as the Maroons grabbed their second victory of the season.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
- "It was a great battle against two skilled teams. We had some nice runs throughout the game, which was key to the win. It was a great team win, but we had some key performances from some individuals. Very excited about this win and looking forward to another good one tomorrow!" - Head coach Kate Robinson
