Baseball Takes One Of Two From Knox On Road

GALESBURG, Ill. – University of Chicago baseball was back on the road and began a three game series against Knox with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Maroons fell in a tight game one before their bats put out the Prairie Fire in the second game of the afternoon.

RESULTS
UChicago – 5
Knox – 6

UChicago – 18
Knox – 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • Knox (8-19, 3-12 MWC) jumped out to a four-run lead in game one before the University of Chicago (10-18, 9-5 MWC) began their comeback in the top of the fifth frame. The Maroons plated their first run via a wild pitch before Erik Rindner singled to score both Michael Gladden and Braden Jirovec.
    • The Prairie Fire would get one back in the bottom half of that fifth stanza to go up 5-3 but RBIs from Eddie McCarthy in the eighth and Jonathan Zeevi in the top of the ninth tied the game and sent it into extras.
    • UChicago would go down quietly in the top of the tenth but the same couldn't be said for their opponent. Knox began the stanza with a single and that baserunner would eventually come around to score in a 6-5 extra innings loss for the Maroons.
  • Game Two
    • There would be no extras in game two, however. In fact, the game wouldn't even be destined for nine innings with how the Maroons offense preformed. A pair of walks brought in two during the Maroons first at bats and a Rindner sac fly in the top of the second allowed them to tie the game at 3-3 before the real fun began.
    • UChicago plated four in the third with singles from Jack Sharp and Gladden bringing in three of those tallies. The Maroons would get another two in the sixth behind a Richard Lu base hit, but it was the seventh where the game was put to rest.
    • Nine Maroon runners touched home plate in the frame with the big blow coming off the bat of Jackson Slipock and his three-run homer. Knox had no answer for the visitors as UChicago salvages the day with a 18-3 blowout win.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
  • Game One
  • Game Two
    • Jackson Slipock: 2-for-5, run scored, five RBIs
    • Branden Jirovec: 4-for-5, four runs scored, two RBIs
WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will have somewhat of a unique day ahead of them tomorrow. They'll finish up their three game set with Knox starting at 12:00 pm before heading 20 minutes up the road to complete their series against Monmouth from the beginning of the month at approximately 4:00 pm.
