Lacrosse Locks Down Top Spot In CCIW Tournament

KENOSHA, Wis. – Having already locked down a share of the CCIW title on Wednesday, University of Chicago lacrosse wanted the whole thing to themselves when they took on Carthage on the road. The Maroons fended off a first quarter rush by the Firebirds before taking over complete control of the contest in their 14-goal win to wrap up the regular season.

RESULT
UChicago – 24
Carthage - 10

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • University of Chicago (11-4, 6-0 CCIW) faced something that they hadn't seen in quite some time today: first quarter adversity. The Maroons scored seven in the opening 15 minutes, but Carthage (10-6, 4-2 CCIW) put up five of their own and trailed by only two going into the second frame. The defense went into lockdown mode though from that point on and allowed just a single goal in each of the next two stanzas.
  • UChicago had tripled up the Firebirds heading into the fourth and added three more goals to their already impressive total of 21. They allowed the same amount of Carthage points, but the outcome of the contest was never in doubt as they officially secured sole possession of the CCIW regular season title.
  • Gabrielle Kiewe made her Maroon debut and stopped five shots in the victory while the defense forced 22 Carthage turnovers and collected 26 ground balls in the winning effort.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
  • Lulu Hardy's eight goals in the contest ties the programs single game record that was set back and done twice during the 2019 season by Karina Schulze.
  • The team as a whole also entered the record books as they broke the single game shots on goal record with 41 on Saturday, one more than the previous high water mark.
