Butka's Complete Game Highlights Baseball's Sweep

CHICAGO – University of Chicago was back at home in Midwest Conference play and looking to rebound after a tough two game loss to Beloit on Friday. The Maroon bats were active all day and the pitching took care of the Fighting Scots offense in a two game sweep on Saturday.

RESULTS
Monmouth – 1
UChicago – 6

Monmouth – 4
UChicago – 10

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • University of Chicago's (6-15, 5-2 MWC) first game against Monmouth College (10-10, 3-5 MWC) featured some timely offense and a stellar pitching performance. The Maroons got on the board in the first courtesy of a Fighting Scots error and added two more in the second after a Jackson Slipock single that made it 3-1.
    • Slipock singled once again in the eighth to drive in the Maroons fourth run and the scoring came to a close with two more in the very same inning.
    • The Maroons really only needed two of those six runs however as John Butka was in control the entire afternoon. The UChicago starter tossed a complete game, allowing just one run off six hits to get his second win of the season.
  • Game Two
    • The offense kept cruising right along in game two for the Maroons. The home team compiled ten runs and 18 hits as they tried to take both games from Monmouth.
    • UChicago did their most damage in the first where they took advantage of some Monmouth errors to push across five runs. Michael Gladden, Eddie McCarthy, Jonathan Zeevi, and Braden Jirovec all tallied RBIs with Jirovec's double being the eventual game winner.
    • Kirk Waller got the win in relief after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings which was followed up by Kason Pelz and Sam Klanot also posting goose eggs in the Maroons 10-4 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES WHO'S ON DECK
With the Maroons series finale against Monmouth on Sunday being postponed, UChicago will pick things back up with a single nine-inning contest against Beloit on Wednesday, April 10th starting at 3:00 pm in Wisconsin.
