APPLETON, Wis. – It was postseason time for the University of Chicago and Appleton, Wis. would be the location for the 2024 Midwest Conference Tournament. The Maroons couldn't do much on offense in game one against Beloit but put up 20 runs off 20 hits in game two against Cornell to stay alive in the postseason.
RESULTS
Beloit – 11
UChicago – 1
UChicago – 20
Cornell – 6
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game One
- Beloit (23-15, 14-10 MWC) was first up on the docket for University of Chicago (18-23, 16-8 MWC) as each team began their Midwest Conference tournament journey. The contest began with three scoreless frames on both sides of the field, but everything would change in the fourth.
- The Maroons would give up seven runs to the Buccaneers in that fourth frame, and while there was still plenty of time to mount a comeback, UChicago just couldn't put anything together to get back into the contest.
- The Maroon & White managed just seven hits, two of which belonged to Richard Lu who also had the lone RBI for the designated home team. Four more Beloit runs would end up crossing home plate as UChicago was sent to the loser's side of the bracket in an 11-1 defeat.
- Game Two
- The bats were quiet in game one, but they couldn't get any louder in their first elimination game of the tournament against Cornell (23-18, 13-11 MWC). The Maroons went down 3-1 after the first two innings but grabbed the lead with an Erik Rindner grand slam in the fourth inning.
- A run from the Rams in both the bottom of the same frame as well as the fifth tied the game but two UChicago runs in the sixth gave them the lead once more. Cornell refused to go away and managed to push the score to 7-6 before an explosive seventh inning rolled around.
- The Maroons plated 13 runs in the top of the seventh but the most notable thing about the feat they accomplished is that each run came across after they had already registered two outs. 19 batters came to the plate in a stanza where they also had 10 hits and still left three on base as the Maroons kept their season alive with a very notable 20-6 seven inning victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
