FOOTBALL FALLS TO MONMOUTH IN HOME OPENER

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago football team faced a difficult task in their home opener on Saturday against the Monmouth College Fighting Scots, a team against whom they had lost four-in-a-row. Despite opening strong and outscoring the Scots 14-10 in the fourth quarter, the Maroons were unable to contain Monmouth's potent rushing attack, and the visitors handed their hosts a 13-point loss in the first game of Midwest Conference play in UChicago's home opener.

RESULT
Monmouth College – 34
University of Chicago – 21

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first quarter, University of Chicago (0-2, 0-1 MWC) got off to a great start as Jack Ruff capped off a 7-play, 55-yard opening drive with an 18-yard endzone connection with Diego Solis to put the Maroons ahead 7-0 less than five minutes in. From there, however, Monmouth's (1-1, 1-0 MWC) defense tightened up and the Scots' offense began to find its rhythm. A 30-yard field goal got the visitors on the board with four minutes to play in the opening stanza, and a 32-yard rushing score just before the end of the first frame gave Monmouth a 10-7 lead after 15 minutes of play.
  • The Scots began the second quarter with an efficient, 61-yard drive that culminated with the visitors' second rushing touchdown of the day to increase the Maroons' deficit to 10. Both teams attempted, but missed, long field goals towards the end of the period and Monmouth went into halftime ahead 17-7.
  • The third quarter saw the Scots take advantage of great field position following a UChicago turnover and made the home team pay with a nine-yard house call. Early in the fourth, Monmouth tacked on yet another touchdown on the ground to make it a 31-7 game and 31 unanswered Scots' points.
  • On the verge of another lopsided defeat, the Maroons mounted a spirited comeback toward the end of the final frame, with first year running back Miles Parlet leading the way. Parlet scored his first career touchdown and ran for a team-high 103 yards on just 11 carries. Veteran RB Kyle James also found the endzone, while Jake Lowry chipped in 78 yards including a 37-yard scamper – UChicago's longest play of the game. Christopher Simington and Mark Gorbatenko spearheaded the Maroons' defensive effort with two tackles-for-loss each and Aiden Mandell led all UChicago pass-catchers with three receptions for 32 yards. In the end, however, four Monmouth rushing scores proved too much to overcome and the Maroons fell 34-21 in their home opener.
