GALESBURG, Ill. – Hunting for their first win of the 2024 campaign, University of Chicago football traveled 200 miles west to meet the Knox College Prairie Fire on a cloudy Saturday afternoon in Galesburg. Thanks to stellar play from two promising first years, a strong performance by a senior quarterback making his first career start, and a lockdown defensive effort, the Maroons secured their first victory of the season as they defeated Knox for the fifth consecutive meeting between the two teams.
RESULT
UChicago – 27
Knox – 13
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Early in the first quarter, University of Chicago (1-2, 1-1 MWC) orchestrated their best series of the season to-date as senior quarterback Teddy Gouldin, in the first start of his career, spearheaded a 9-play, 95-yard drive that ended with a 21-yard dash to the endzone by fellow-senior Kyle James to give the Maroons a 7-0 lead over Knox (2-1, 1-1 MWC) at the end of the first frame.
- The Prairie Fire then launched a long drive of their own to begin the second quarter, and a 4-yard rushing score leveled the game at 7-7 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. However, after they surrendered a touchdown, the UChicago defense stepped up with Stirling Sakashita and Josh Minton each registering interceptions on back-to-back Knox possessions. Minton's interception, the third of his career, set up Nathaniel Kim for a 35-yard field goal with 44 seconds left on the clock, and the Maroons took a 10-7 lead into halftime.
- In the third, a pair of newcomers rose to the occasion, enabling UChicago to put some distance between themselves and the Prairie Fire. Graduate student Mozes Mooney caught 5 passes on the day for a total of 49 yards and his 2-yard touchdown reception capped off a methodical, 11-play drive to begin the second half. Meanwhile, first-year Miles Parlet, who was the team's top rusher for the second-straight week with 99 yards on the ground, made the play of the game for UChicago by bursting free for a 63-yard touchdown on the Maroons' ensuing possession. House calls by Parlet and Mooney, along with a team-best seven catches for 65 yards by Diego Solis, gave the Maroons a 24-7 lead after three quarters of play.
- Trailing by three scores, Knox made things a little more interesting by finding the endzone on their first offensive series of the fourth quarter, but the UChicago defense buckled down from there and refused to allow the home team any more points. Seamus Kelly had a disruptive day with one sack and three tackles that went as a loss and Michael D'Orazio recorded a team-high nine takedowns to keep the Prairie Fire's offense at bay. Offensively, Gouldin played a turnover-free game under center, while Kim added a 31-yard field goal with less than three minutes remaining to put the game firmly out of reach, and the Maroons locked up a 27-13 win over Knox for their first victory of the season.
