#8 Men's Soccer Shuts Down Wheaton In Second Half

CHICAGO – Back home for the first time since opening weekend, No. 8 University of Chicago men's soccer kept non-conference action going when they hosted Wheaton College. Each team had a run of three goals in the first half, but the Maroons were able to silence the Thunder in a two-goal back frame to take the contest 5-3 on Wednesday night.

RESULT
Wheaton – 3
No. 8 UChicago – 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • No. 8 University of Chicago (5-1) scored early and often in the first half and quickly jumped out to a three-goal lead. Edward Wu opened up the scoring when he assisted on Robbie Pino's first goal of the game before Lyndon Hu knocked one in from Evan Kanellos less than three minutes later. Capping off the trio of strikes was Pino once again with the helpers going to Jadyn Hsieh-Bailey and Danny Mendoza in the 10th minute.
  • However, Wheaton (1-4-1) answered right back. The Thunder rattled off three goals of their own, the last coming with 52 seconds left before halftime, to tie the game at 3-3 and force UChicago to find an answer in the second stanza.
  • The Maroons found that answer and more. Hsieh-Bailey notched the game winner from Max Weene just 47 seconds after the intermission and Sam Jimenez added an insurance strike from Weene in the 78th minute. The UChicago defense also stepped up their game. They limited the Thunder to just three shots in the last 45 minutes, none of which found their way to keeper Dhirpal Shah in the Maroons two goal victory to run their winning streak to five games.
