Volleyball Splits Even in First Day at UAA Round Robin

NEW YORK – In their first day of UAA play the (RV) University of Chicago volleyball team went 1-1. After a clean sweep against Brandeis University, the Maroons fell in a tough four set battle versus Carnegie Mellon.

RESULTS
 Brandeis University – 0 (16, 17, 14)
(RV) UChicago – 3 (25, 25, 25)
Carnegie Mellon University – 3 (16, 17, 14)
(RV) UChicago – 1 (25, 25, 25)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • vs Brandeis University
    • To obtain their fifth straight sweep, the Maroons held the Judges to a total of 38 points and an attack percentage of .140. Holding the reins from the very beginning, UChicago's momentum was the overpowering factor in the win.
    • Though complete domination in sets one and two, Brandeis gave the Maroons a fight in the third. After hitting 21 points, the teams tossed the scoring back and forth until an offensive error by the Judges gave the UChicago point 26 and a slam from Thalita Marangon gave them the win at 27.
    • Amelia Gibbs and Marangon led Chicago with seven kills each, Gibbs also tallied five blocks to pat to her stat sheet. Diya Mishra added six hits of her own.
  • vs Carnegie Mellon University
    • CMU started the match off with a three point run in the first set, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Though losing the first two sets, UChicago won the third, but unfortunately couldn't force a fifth.
    • Throughout the match no team took a defining lead as both traded points as time went on. The Maroons only recorded 12 less kills than the Terriers, but overall held a .113 attack percentage on the day.
    • Small mistakes caught up to Chicago in this match. With seven service errors, 25 attack errors, and seven receiving errors, Carnegie Mellon capitalized on the small opportunities given by the Maroons.
    • Diya Mishra led Chicago with 13 kills and a block. Amelia Gibbs followed closely behind with 10 executed attacks.
