CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Chicago football team traveled nearly 2,000 miles to Southern California to begin their 2024 campaign in an out-of-conference game against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags. Unfortunately, the UChicago offense was never able to find their rhythm and that proved to be the difference as the Maroons opened the season with a shutout loss on Saturday afternoon.
RESULT
University of Chicago – 0
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps – 24
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first quarter, University of Chicago (0-1) saw themselves trailing by a touchdown before their offense ever saw the football after CMS (1-0) drove 70 yards in 9 plays to score on the game's opening drive. The Stags found the endzone again late in the quarter and led UChicago 14-0 after 15 minutes of play.
- CMS scored another touchdown on their first series of the second frame and added a 27-yard field goal to take a 24-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
- UChicago's defense played well in the second half and kept the Stags off the scoreboard as Banks Platford and Christopher Simington each notched one sack apiece, while Aidan Cappellino logged a team-high 12 tackles. However, CMS played suffocating defense the entire afternoon, and the Maroons could never muster an answer offensively.
