#3 Men's Soccer Opens NCAA Tournament with 2-0 Win over DePauw

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The 3rd-ranked University of Chicago men's soccer team opened its postseason run on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over DePauw.

DePauw had an outstanding chance to open the scoring in the seventh minute when the Tigers whipped in a corner kick and flicked a header to the back post, but Max Weene was there to make the save for the Maroons to keep the score level.

In the 25th minute, the Maroons would strike first as Alex Gomas took advantage of an errant pass by the DePauw back line, beat his defender, and slipped a shot past the keeper for a 1-0 UChicago lead. The goal for Gomas was the third of his season and the first since October 4 for the senior.

UChicago had a great chance to double their lead in the 40th minute when Samuel Jimenez broke through the DePauw back line to create a one-on-one with the keeper, the Tiger keeper made a great save. However, two minutes later, the Maroons would find their second goal when Edward Wu lofted a cross into the box, and Jimenez got a foot on the DePauw clearance attempt and ripped a left-footed strike near post for the goal. The goal for Jimenez is just his second goal of the  season for the Maroons.

After a slow opening to the second half, neither team wa sable to get much going on the offensive end of the field with outstanding defense from both sides. The Tigers had a great chance in the 80th minute to cut the lead in half with a slicing shot, but Ali Alamery made the save look easy to keep the Tigers off the board and preserve the clean sheet with just two total saves in the game.

With the win, the Maroons improve to 12-2-5 on the season and reach the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in the past 11 years. The Maroons will take on their UAA rival, #12 WashU, with a Sweet 16 berth on the line on Sunday at 3 PM at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
