#3 Men's Soccer Falls to #12 WashU in Season Finale

ST. LOUIS -- The University of Chicago men's soccer team came up short on Saturday night with a 1-0 loss to #12 WashU in the final game of the regular season.

After a slow start to the match with each team feeling the other out, the match changed completely in the 16th minute. Giovanni Caselli broke behind the defense and was in one-on-one with the keeper, but he was brought down from behind by a WashU defender who was handed a red card to put the Bears down to 10 men for the remainder of the match.

Despite being down a man, the Bears found their moment of glory in the 33rd minute when James Whitehurst finished with a beautiful strike at the near post to put the Bears in front 1-0.

The second half was all UChicago with the Maroons outshooting WashU 11-4 and earning 10 more corner kicks than the Bears, but the WashU defense continued to stand tall. The Maroons would take the final eight shots of the game in the final minutes, but they were unable to find the back of the net. The final shot of the game from Max Weene curled beautifully around the wall and rang the crossbar before the final whistle sounded.

With the loss, the Maroons fall to 11-2-5 on the season and 4-1-2 in the UAA. The loss also snaps the fourth-longest unbeaten streak in program history which came to an end at 16 consecutive games.

The Maroons have done enough to earn an at-large berth into the 2025 NCAA Tournament, and they will wait to hear their name called during the selection show on Monday, November 10, at 10:30 AM CT.
