CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Chicago women's lacrosse team put together a strong effort on Sunday afternoon, but a late surge by No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer proved to be the difference as the Maroons fell 14-10 in a competitive road contest.
Neck-and-Neck First Half
The Maroons (1-1) went toe-to-toe with the nationally ranked Sagehens (3-0) throughout the first half. Peyton McGuire and Evelina Swigart each found the back of the net in the opening quarter, helping UChicago keep pace at 2-2 after the first 15 minutes.
UChicago built momentum in the second quarter, taking its first lead of the game after Sora Choi scored off an assist from Avery Song. Jill Hooey, Wynne Boggan, and Swigart added goals in a back-and-forth period, sending the Maroons into halftime trailing just 7-6.
Third Quarter Push
The Maroons came out firing in the third quarter, with Lulu Hardy and Ella Kodl leading the charge offensively. UChicago netted four goals in the period, including Hardy's second of the game off a feed from Jane Chen, which briefly put the Maroons ahead. Song also capitalized early in the third off an assist from Choi.
Late Surge Lifts Pomona-Pitzer
With the Maroons ahead by two entering the final frame, the Sagehens found another gear, outscoring UChicago 6-0 in the final 15 minutes. The Maroons had several scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize, as Pomona-Pitzer's defense tightened and their transition game created fast-break chances.
Goalkeeper Rachel Keefe was active in net, tallying 14 saves to keep the Maroons in the game, but Pomona-Pitzer's late execution proved to be the difference.
