WALTHAM, Mass. -- The University of Chicago baseball team swept the series-opening doubleheader with Brandeis on Friday night for the team's first UAA wins since 1997. The Maroons took the opening game 5-0 before adding a 9-6 win in the second game of the day. The teams will meet for the third game of the series on Saturday at 1 PM ET at Yetten Field, 19 Athletic Field Road, Waltham, MA.
The opening game of the series featured a pitching duel between Chicago's
Drew Bryan and Brandeis's Chris Lowe as the two pitchers combined to allow just four hits and zero runs through the first six innings of the game. The Maroons were able to open the scoring in the seventh inning as they manufactured their own rally. After a bunt single by
Brady Miller, he stole second and went to third when the catcher's throw went into centerfield. He then scored on an RBI single byÂ
Eddie McCarthy. Two batters later, McCarthy scored on an error by the Brandeis shortstop to double the score to 2-0. UChicago added to their lead in the eighth inning as
Jackson Slipock ripped a two-run double down the left field line and then scored a run of his own following a pair of wild pitches by the Judges.
On the mound,
Drew Bryan earned his second win of the season after pitching seven shutout innings with just 2 hits and 2 walks allowed while striking out 9 batters.
Landon Brice and
Kason Pelz added two near-perfect innings in relief with just one base runner allowed to close out the game one victory.
The Maroons scored the first run of the second game after a bases-loaded walk by
Jack Sharp, but they were unable to push another run across as the Judges got out of the bases loaded jam. Brandeis quickly took their momentum on the defensive end and turned it into offense with three runs of their own to take a 3-1 lead after two innings. The Maroons cut the lead to one in the third with a sacrifice fly by
Max Wiesner, but Brandeis once again answered with three runs and led 6-2 after six innings of play.
In the seventh inning, the Maroons got to see the Brandeis bullpen for the first time in the game, and they took advantage.
Michael Gladden singled home
Richard Lu, then
Braden Jirovec took home on a first-third play, and
Erik Rindner capped off the rally with an RBI single to bring home Gladden to cut the lead to one for UChicago.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Maroons entered needing a run to keep the game going, and they did not take long to do just that. After a leadoff single to left by
Braden Jirovec,
Michael Gladden lofted one high and deep over the left field wall to put the University of Chicago in front for the first time since the second inning with a 7-6 lead.
Jackson Slipock and
Jack Goldstein would add RBI singles later in the inning to take a 9-6 lead, and
Landon Brice would seal the game with a shutout ninth inning for his first save of the season.
Hayden Leiderman struggled in the game with 6 earned runs allowed in just 4.2 innings pitched, but the UChicago bullpen arms of
Matthew Richert,
John Butka,
Kirk Waller, and
Landon Brice combined to pitch 4.1 shutout innings with just 2 hit allowed to close out the doubleheader sweep.Â
Michael Gladden led the team with 3 hits and 3 runs scored in the doubleheader, and
Braden Jirovec and
Erik Rindner each added 3 hits as well for the Maroons.
With the wins, the Maroons improve to 14-5 overall and 2-0 in the UAA. The team caps off their four-game series with the Judges on Saturday at 1 PM ET and Sunday at 11 AM ET.
