Maroons Split Doubleheader with NYU Behind Bounce-Back Pitching Performance

CHICAGO - The University of Chicago baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader against visiting NYU, falling 8–3 in the opener before responding with a sharp 3–1 victory in game two. The Maroons now sit at 26–13 on the season as they near the close of regular season play.

Game 1: NYU 8, UChicago 3

UChicago's day started on a tough note as NYU jumped out to a quick four-run lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of five early hits off starter Hayden Leiderman (5–3). The Maroons chipped away with a pair of runs in the second—Jackson Slipock ripped an RBI double and Brady Miller followed with a run-scoring single—then added another in the third to cut the deficit to 5–3.

Despite a strong 5.2 innings of relief from Uday Narottam, who struck out eight, UChicago couldn't complete the comeback. NYU tacked on three more in the seventh, and the Maroons were held scoreless over the final six innings despite drawing seven walks and putting multiple runners on base.

Slipock led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a stolen base, while Max Wiesner added a double and a run scored.

Game 2: UChicago 3, NYU 1

The Maroons wasted no time flipping the script in game two. Braden Jirovec singled and scored in the first inning on Michael Gladden's RBI knock, giving UChicago a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Starter Landon Brice (2–0) was stellar, tossing five scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out four without a walk.

A two-run fifth inning—featuring RBI singles from Wiesner and Slipock—gave UChicago breathing room, and reliever John Butka closed the door with a two-inning save. Butka allowed just one run on two hits, striking out three.

Offensively, Gladden and Jirovec again set the tone, each collecting two hits, while the Maroons stole five bases to keep NYU's defense under pressure. Clean defense and clutch pitching sealed the bounce-back win.

UChicago will look to carry the momentum from game two into the upcoming week as they gear up for the final stretch before postseason play. For their last regular season game, they'll head to Concordia- Chicago Wednesday night.
