RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The University of Chicago baseball team came up short in their regular season finale on Wednesday night at Concordia-Chicago.
The Cougars struck first with three runs in the first inning of the game to build an early lead, but the UChicago bats did not take long to get warmed up.
Brady Miller singled and stole second, and
Richard Lu singled him home for the first run of the game.
In the third inning, the Maroons took the lead with a big inning. After
Erik Rindner was hit by a pitch,
Max Wiesner singled him over to third and
Jackson Slipock brought him home with a sacrifice fly. Then, after a pair of walks loaded the bases, the Maroons jumped in front with a 2-run double by
Jack Sharp for a 4-3 lead.
Concordia Chicago added two more runs in the fifth inning, but the sixth inning saw the Maroons level the score once more. After
Jack Sharp led off the inning with a single,
Richard Lu beat out a bunt single to put two runners on with no outs.
Braden Jirovec would advance the runners on a sacrifice bunt, and
Erik Rindner scored Sharp on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5. However, a two-run home run for the Cougars in the bottom of the inning would prove to be the difference as the Maroons fell 7-5.
Drew Bryan pitched great for the Maroons with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings of one-hit baseball.
Landon Brice and
John Butka combined to close out the final 2.1 innings of the game with only 2 base runners allowed.Â
Max Wiesner was the star at the plate with 4 hits, and
Jack Sharp added 2 hits and 2 RBIs in the loss.
With the loss, UChicago moves to 26-14 on the season. The Maroons will now set their sights on the NCAA Tournament with the hope of hearing their name called on Selection Monday. The full NPI rankings can be followed
