CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago baseball team dropped the first UAA game of the season on Saturday with a 9-2 loss to the WashU Bears.
After three scoreless innings to start the game, WashU struck first in the third inning with six runs, five of which were unearned after an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt at the beginning of the inning. After an RBI single and a bases loaded hit by pitch, the Bears broke the game open with a grand slam by Brandon Buday for the first home run by any player at J. Kyle Anderson field this season.
The Maroons struck back in the fifth inning after a WashU error scored
Jackson Slipock for the first UChicago run of the game. UChicago would add their second run in the eighth inning an another WashU error. Following a walk by
Brady Miller and a single by
Richard Lu, a hard ground ball by
Michael Gladden went off the glove of the WashU third basemen to score the second run of the contest. Lu, Slipock, and
Jack Sharp recorded the only three hits of the game for the Maroons in the 9-2 loss.
On the mound,
Jackson Bailey went four innings with just one earned run allowed, but his five unearned runs were the story of the game.
Ben Liebel,
Uday Narottam,
Mike Sosna, and
Grant Tenuta combined to pitch the final five innings of the game with 7 strikeouts and just four hits allowed in relief.
WIth the loss, the Maroons fall to 19-6 and 6-1 in UAA play. The Maroons will look to lock up the series win on Sunday at 11 AM CT as they welcome the Bears to J. Kyle Anderson Field for the series finale.
