BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team began its 2025 season with a strong 3-1 win over Greenville on Friday night in the opening game of the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.
The Maroons controlled the pace throughout, outhitting Greenville .271 to .045Â while also holding advantages in kills (52-33), digs (68-55), blocks (11-3), and service aces (14-12).
Senior Diya Mishra spearheaded the attack with a match-high 19 kills while hitting .293. She added 10 digs to secure the first double-double of her career. Fellow senior Thalita Marangon also posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs.
UChicago's freshmen made an immediate impact at the net. Olivia Zamis tallied five kills and eight blocks – becoming the first Maroon since Jillian Amsler in 2023 to register eight or more blocks in a single match. Olivia Ip chipped in six kills and seven blocks of her own.
The Maroons' setting tandem orchestrated a balanced effort on both sides of the ball. Grace Xu (19 assists, 10 digs) and Ellie Maxwell (18 assists, 14 digs) each recorded double-doubles, marking the first time since 2022 that UChicago featured four players with double-doubles in the same match.
With the win, UChicago moves to 1-0 on the season. The Maroons return to action on Saturday with two matches in Bloomington, facing Earlham at 10:00 AM CT before squaring off against nationally-ranked #19 Illinois Wesleyan at 12:30 PM CT.
