#6 Women's Soccer Battles to 2-2 Draw in Physical Match with Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The 6th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Hope College on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch attack started off quickly with a breakaway goal in the 6th minute to put Hope up 1-0 and give UChicago their first deficit of the season early on in the non-conference showdown.

Kamiryn Braxton Grimes had a pair of excellent chance to level the scoreline over the next 15 minute. In the 10th minute, Braxton Grimes had a point-blank shot in the six-yard box, but the hit the crossbar to keep the Flying Dutch in front 1-0. Then, in the 19th minute, Braxton Grimes dribbled through the defense and ripped a shot from outside the 18, but the Hope keeper laid out to her left to make the diving save.

After going scoreless for the remainder of the half, the two teams went into the locker room with Hope holding a 1-0 advantage. In the opening minute of the second half, UChicago had another opportunity as Braxton Grimes weaved through the Hope defense, but her shot was saved again by the Flying Dutch keeper.

The Maroons finally struck back and leveled the score with a 51st minute goal by Ella Cho after Kamiryn Braxton Grimes chipped a pass across the box to the back post to find the foot of Cho for the goal.

The Flying Dutch struck right back in the 57th minute on a strike from outside the 18 that curled into the far post to take a 2-1 advantage.

UChicago tallied 12 shots over the next 25 minutes of action, leading to 6 Hope saves and a shot off the crossbar, but the Maroons had to continue searching for an equalizer. The tying goal finally came in the 85th minute as Kaitlyn Gomez weaved through the Hope defense to take a shot. The Hope keeper made the save to deflect the shot off the crossbar, but Mary Stuart Kerrigan was at the right place at the right time to head home the rebound at the back post to tie the game at two.

The Maroons outshot the Flying Dutch 21-5 in the game, and Kate Bruntlett and Mary Stuart Kerrigan led the team with 5 shots in the win.

With the draw, the Maroons move to 5-0-1 on the season. #6 UChicago will return to action on Sunday as they continue their Michigan swing against Kalamazoo at 3 PM ET.
