Five-Goal Barrage Leads Men's Soccer to Road Win at Albion

ALBION, Mich. -- The University of Chicago men's soccer team rolled to a 5-0 win over Albion on Wednesday night to extend their unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games.

The Maroons opened the mid-west match with a bang when Alex Gomas dribbled through a pair of defenders and was taken down from behind in the box to earn the penalty kick just 54 seconds into the match. Evan Kanellos stepped to the spot and confidently buried the kick to give the Maroons the 1-0 lead with the quickest goal since 2019.

Seven minutes later, the Maroons doubled their lead when Kai Walsh chipped a pass into the box to find the foot of Chase Perry who found the back of the net.

In the 35th minute, William Stewart found a long ball on the left side and ripped a cross into the box. Samuel Jimenez connected with a header to beat the keeper at the far post for a 3-0 UChicago advantage.

Then, just 98 seconds later, UChicago found their fourth goal of the half when Stewart picked the pocket off an Albion defender and found Giovanni Caselli in the 18-yard box. Caselli tried to chip the Britons keeper, but he came up with a big save. However, the rebound deflected right off the leg of Caselli and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

After continuing to dominate the possession in the second half, UChicago added their fifth goal of the game as Rafe Westlund scored his first career goal in the 82nd minute to seal the victory.

Caselli led the team with 4 shots and 4 shots on goal, and Ali Alamery made all three saves he faced to record his fifth clean sheet of the season.

With the win, the Maroons improve to 4-1-3 and extend their unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games. The University of Chicago returns to action on Saturday, September 27, as they host the Kalamazoo Hornet on Senior Day.
